Super Saturday 13: Trend-Spotting

Celebutantes like Kelly Ripa, Kim Kardashian and Twilight’s Ashley Greene gathered in the Hamptons to show their support for The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and get their hands on some designer duds at Super Saturday 13 benefit. The fundraiser, dubbed as The World’s Largest Designer Garage Sale proved to be a hotbed for summer’s transitioning trends: neutral-hued fedoras, quirky espadrille wedges and an array of other hot must-haves.
Here are my Top 10 Trend-Spotting Highlights:
1. Beirn’s Jenna handbag in vibrant snakeskin dominated the top of many shoppers’ lists, including the Kardashian sisters and Star Jones
2. Bladeless Dyson Fans with advanced wind technology sold out in a record 28 minutes, easily surpassing any of the season’s hottest designers

This event would be possible with out the ongoing support of Donna Karan who started this event 13 years ago with friend and Harper’s Bazzar Editor in Chief Liz Tilberis (who lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer a decade ago) and Next Model Management founder Faith Kates Kogan. Along with InStyle Magazine the organization attracts Hollwood’s biggest and brightest stars including.

New comers to the event Ashley Green and all of the Kardashian Ladies (Kris Jenner included) heated up the “red carpet” this year creating the biggest media buzz the event has ever had. Guests lined up at the entrance of the event to shop elbow-to-elbow with New York and Hollywood’s elite. I had the opportunity to talk to many of the celebs – stay tuned for videos with Ashley Green, the Kardashians, Kelly Ripa and Donna Karan.

Super Saturday 13: Shopping!

I’ve always said… “Design a good event and guests will come. Design a great event and guests will stay!” and shop. At Super Saturday 13 guests shopped to the tune of 3.4 million dollars! This year we designed a gazette called “The Super Saturday Shopper” to help guide guest through the color coded sale so they could quickly find the fashion, cosmetics and house wares they wanted to spend their money on.

Shopping is the name of the game in Super Saturday’s Designer Sale. We had the hottest names in fashion, beauty and home accessories at 50 – 70% off. As the day progressed prices plummeted heating up the shopping frenzy up until the very end of the event.
Deals were abundant this year, which was evident as multiple booths sold out merely hours after the doors opened. Dyson fans and vacuums were the first to go. In only 28 minutes, they broke the sell-out record, easily surpassing this year’s other hot-ticket items such as June Jacobs’ papaya facemask and Tory Burch’s elephant print bikini. Also at the top of many shoppers’ lists were the Jenna bag by Beirn and the always-popular Givenchy perfumes.
A major hot spot was the Rachel Zoe Accessories Salon, where true fashionistas could nab haute couture at bargain basement prices. This was a first stop for many of the guests including all of the Kardashian ladies.
Super Saturday 13: Fun!

Super Saturday caters to the old and young Hampton-ites alike with a bevy of family-oriented activities. The event attracts major household names like Nintendo, Pinkberry, DKNY and Pop Chips as well as major celebrities. These companies vie for the attention of the influential guests by creating fun and engaging activities and a much needed rest from the hectic shopping.
One of my favorite activities this year was Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Well-being Oasis. Relaxation Practitioners administered massages and aroma therapy to the guests and crated a peaceful oasis just steps from the busy designer sale.

Guests received complimentary massages at Donna Karan's Urban Zen booth
Essie’s complimentary manicures and Physique 57’s foot massages attracted countless people in need of a little relaxation after long hours of bargain hunting in the summer sun.
Family entertainment was not in short supply… Nintendo’s air-conditioned Wii lounge and Space Odyssey, a futuristic arcade center, kept the younger crowd busy while their parents continued bargain hunting through-out the day.

Food and drinks are always abundant at Super Saturday and this year was no exception. Patron Spirits sponsored the bar and we created two specialty bars in the Nintendo Lounge and InStyle salon – refreshing summer cocktails we always close at hand. Besides the fabulous lunch of summer fair and grilled delights served by Sant Ambroeus, snacks and treats from Pop Chips, Funky monkey, Crumb Bake Shop, Pinkberry, Carvel and Southampton’s infamous Tate’s Cookies we positioned throughout the event surrounding the sale and family activities.

Spring in Flight
Recently, I was approached by French cosmetic company Cle De Peau, a daughter company of beauty giant Shiseido Corporation, to create an otherworldly garden environment debuting their Fall/Winter 2010 Color Collection, full of rich jewel tones and bright natural neutrals. As an added request, they asked that we influence our design around their emblem: a single butterfly. The client wanted to develop a space that would leave guests with a jaw-dropping environmental experience.
My team and I brainstormed some different ways we could incorporate the butterfly into a specifically garden space. In the end, I decided to create a table top and canopy that reflected the flight and flutter of the butterfly; beautiful in its variety of colors and size, the butterfly can instill a sense of magic in its viewer.

It was this magic that I hoped to mimic in my table top. By developing each place setting individually, I was able to give each guest their own unique experience. Colors, textures and accessories creatively fluttered around a base table setting. It was as if the table setting itself was emerging a breath of life.

The final product was a majestic community-style table setting that provided a unique and intimate conversation for each guest. As a special gift, guests were given one-of-a-kind necklaces from London-based designer Tara Turner, a close friend of Cle De Peau Creative Director Lucia Pieroni.

Super Saturday 12: Celebrity Entourage
Super Saturday 12 provided to the opportunity to mingle with a number of “of-the-moment” celebrities. Ranging from fashion and film to television and talk shows, Mark had the chance to pick the brains of some of each industry’s leading men and women. Check out what they had to say…
