While learning the Jazz songs, “Whiplash” and “Caravan”, J.K. Simmons’ character brutally auditions three drummers on the double-time swing into the night before finally giving it to Andrew, played by Miles Teller. Perfecting the double-time swing to expertly play these classic jazz numbers was Andrew’s obsession throughout the movie.

Pro tip: a sling was originally an American drink composed of spirit and water, sweetened and flavored.

Ingredients

1 tsp superfine sugar
1 oz lemon juice
3 dashes of orange bitters
2 oz double aged bourbon
2 tsp club soda
1 twist lemon peel
1 orange round

Directions

• In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the sugar, lemon juice, and bourbon. Shake well. Strain well. Strain into a highball glass and top with club soda. Garnish with the lemon twist and an orange round.
