Create a WOW centerpiece using Peeps and jelly beans!
Small Low Container or Tray
½ Flat of wheatgrass
3” Terracotta Pot
Larger Colorful Vase or Planter (smaller than the container)
Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
14” Wooden Dowel (1/4” diameter)
6” Styrofoam ball
Multi-color Tissue Paper
Plaster of Paris
Toothpicks
Jelly Beans
Peeps Variety Pack
Fill the low square container with wheatgrass and sprinkle with cool water to keep the grass hydrated.
Cover the wooden dowel rod with strips of tissue paper by first running a bead of hot glue down the ¼ of length of the dowel at a time. Spiral the tissue paper down the rod to cover the glue and repeat until the entire dowel is smoothly covered. With a firm grip on the dowel rod, push the rod approximately ½ way into the Styrofoam ball to create a hole. Remove the rod and set the ball aside.
Create the base of the topiary by securing the dowel rod in to the small terracotta planter using a quick-dry plaster. Once the material is slightly hardened, insert the dowel in the middle of the sealant and centered evenly in the terracotta pot. Let sealant dry overnight.
Check to see that the plaster has completely hardened. Place a small bit of plastic or paper (like a small shopping bag) in the bottom of your colorful vase so when placed inside the vase the terracotta pot sits ½” below the rim.
Fill the remaining space in the vase with colorful jellybeans. Use bright Easter colors that compliment the colors of the Peeps you’ve selected.
To create your Peep topiary topper, cover the small Styrofoam ball with a sheet of colored tissue paper leaving the prepared hole uncovered. Select a color tissue paper that matches your Peep selection; this will give the topiary a uniform look once the Peeps are attached.
Begin adhering the Peeps onto the top of the colored ball using toothpicks cut in half. Press the cut end of the toothpick into the ball ½ way and then skewer the Peep to the tip.
Continue tacking the Peeps onto the ball until the ball has been completely and evenly covered. Fill in gaps with any leftover Peeps you may have. You may need to use additional toothpicks to hold the peep on the lower third of the ball.
Your topiary should resemble the one shown here upon completion.
Place a firm grip on the base of the dowel rod and very gently re-place your topiary on top of your wooden dowel. For added support, place a small amount of hot glue to the tip for the rod and hold in place until dried.
Using a box cutter, carefully cut out a center square from the patch of grass.
Place the topiary planter in the hole you’ve cut in your grass patch. Decorate with colorful Easter candies or cookies attached to lollipop sticks.
Nestle one or two home-decorated eggs into the grass & enjoy your WOW Easter centerpiece!
